The brothers Franklin have broken the cardinal rule of their household, “Leave well enough alone.” Their parents moved them to a small town a long time ago and have worked hard to make connections in the community. They have legitimate fears for the safety of their black boys but the boys have never known anything but safety and feel like their parents are overreacting. When they meet Styx Malone and he suggests the adventure of trading up a bundle of fireworks for moped, step by step, they are all in because they can’t imagine how it would be possible. The boys range all over the county and even hitch a ride on a train to get what they want. In the meantime, they make a good, if wary, friend in Styx while he gives them the best summer of their lives.
