Grand Theft Horse Review

Kim P.’s review:

Sometimes you have to do whatever you can to protect something you love, even if it means stealing a horse. Greg Neri has written an exceptional graphic novel about his cousin, Gail Ruffu a gifted horse trainer turned alleged horse thief. Urgent Envoy, a racehorse she co-owned with her partners suffered a leg injury and needed to retire to heal it, but the co-owners wanted the horse to keep racing. Neri tells an engaging story about his cousin’s adventures. She stole the horse to keep him safe and then she took on law school to learn how to legally keep him safe and fight her case in court. Wilkin’s illustrations and the style of the book work perfectly with the pace of Neri’s story. Wilkin uses pen and ink drawings with plenty of background shading to set the mood. The facial features on his detailed characters evoke emotion and meld perfectly with the story.
