This award winning movie tells a story of a peculiar Japanese extended family living in a small traditional Japanese apartment. The grandmother is the only one making money the honest way. She is kind and compassionate and full of generational wisdom. The other family members also display their human compassion for a brief moment by saving an abused girl they have been noticing on their daily passing by her house. They mutually benefit from their relationship. The new family helped her to get away from abusive parents and she helped them to regain their humanity, even though temporarily. They teach her new life skills… Sometimes it’s better to choose your own family.
