First Rose of Spring Review

Review by Sean C.

At 87 years old, Willie Nelson is showing no signs of slowing down.  He continues to release new material every year, and 2020 is no exception!  First Rose of Spring is his 70th (!) studio album, and every track is a refreshing dose of classic Willie.  This album features two original tracks, “Blue Star” and “Love Just Laughed”, as well as nine songs by other great country artists that Willie covers in his unique style.  Particular standouts include Johnny Paycheck’s “I’m the Only Hell My Mama Ever Raised”, Jimmy Dean’s “Just Bummin’ Around”, and a particularly heartfelt version of “Stealing Home” by Marla Cannon-Goodman.  If you are a fan of Willie Nelson, or just love good song-based storytelling in general, his new album is definitely for you.  Check out a copy from the library, or you can look for dozens of other Willie albums on Hoopla!
