Multi-instrumentalist and singer Valerie June has described her sound as “organic moonshine roots music.” She first made a splash on the national scene with her 2013 album Pushin’ Against A Stone, which was produced by the Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach. Her subsequent releases found her pairing her remarkable and eccentric vocal style with more elaborate music and arrangements. Her newest album continues that trajectory with orchestral strings, sampled drums, and “found sounds” augmenting her soulful tunes. “Call Me A Fool” toes the line between a classic soul tune and something more experimental, with assistance from the legendary “Queen of Memphis Soul,” Carla Thomas.
