Review by Madeleine
I thought this was a wonderful urban adult fantasy novel. Neil Gaiman, I believe, stated he wanted to make a fantasy story that would be similar to The Chronicles of Narnia or Through the Looking Glass but aimed at adults. I think he has done a successful job of making a fantasy tale but for the adult world. The world he created feels so vibrant, immersive, and interesting. The details about “London above” make everything about “London below” feel so plausible. Similar to reading The Chronicles of Narnia when I was a kid and wanted to disappear into wardrobes to get to Narnia, I feel like trying to find my way into Gaiman’s wonderful fantasy world. The characters and descriptions make me want to leave my dull everyday life and dive right into the rich world Gaiman has created.
