According to Biography.Com, the legendary performer Nina Simone was born Eunice Kathleen Waymon on February 21, 1933. The movie Nina examines Simone at various stages of her life and career. Initially trained as a classical pianist, Simone’s talents led her to perform various types of music, including jazz and blues. Her music and voice were also a dominant force during the civil rights movement.
Although there was some initial criticism of this movie because of the controversial casting related to the actress selected to play Simone, I liked this movie, and I found myself continuously engaged while watching. I received a better understanding of the life of Simone and some of the reasoning for her decision to live outside of the United States for some time. In my opinion, Simone was an extremely strong and talented African American performer that endured darkness that can be associated with racial discrimination, financial struggles, alcohol abuse, mental illness, and breast cancer while maintaining the ability to entertain and influence many.
