Review by DJ
Mountains Beyond Mountains, Tracy Kidder’s book, published in 2003, takes us on a journey with Dr. Paul Farmer. From Hatti to Peru, to Cuba, to Russian Siberia, Dr. Farmer works tirelessly to eradicate tuberculosis and HIV in the remotest and poorest parts of the world and to bring health equality to the forgotten.
Working within and around the bureaucratic systems of the world, Dr. Farmer shows what deep compassion for humanity and a selfless, grueling work ethic can accomplish.
I was unaware of Dr. Paul Farmer, an infectious-disease specialist, or his organization, Partners in Health, until his death in February 2022. I am all the better for coming across this book, and I only wish I had read it sooner.
